• Czech president accepts Putin’s invitation to Sochi

    Czech President Miloš Zeman has accepted invitation of his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin to Sochi. The Czech head of state announced the news in New York on Wednesday, where he attended the UN General Assembly. He also said he considered the invitation an honour, adding that he would like to visit other Russian regions as well during his trip in November.

  • Czech kidnapped in Libya in 2015 was probably murdered, says Austria

    A Czech national, who was kidnapped by terrorists in Libya in 2015, was probably murdered soon after the abduction, the Austrian Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday.

    The Czech, along with his Austrian colleague, were employees of the Maltese-Austrian company VAOS. They were among a group of nine foreign workers, who were kidnapped by Islamic State militants in an attack on an oil-field in Libya. According to the latest findings, they were murdered shortly after the kidnapping.

  • Sale of Fairtrade products rose sharply in 2016

    The sale of Fairtrade products in the Czech Republic has been increasing, according to the head of Fairtrade Czech Republic and Slovakia Hana Chorváthová.

    By far the most popular Fairtrade commodity on the market was coffee. In 2016, Czechs bought 326 tonnes of Fairtrade coffee, which was an 88 percent increase on the previous year. Other popular items include chocolate, tea, sugar and biscuits.

  • German retailer Lidl launches e-shop in Czechia

    The German supermarket Lidl has launched an e-shop for the Czech Republic. It is the German retailer’s first e-shop shop in Central and Eastern Europe.

    The online store offers consumer goods that will be delivered within three days. No food items are currently on offer. Customers can already buy from Lidl e-shops in Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany.

    These stores also supply consumer goods plus packaged foods and beverages. All Lidl e-shops are being supplied from a new 44,000 square meter logistics center in Pilsen that opened last November.

  • Concrete barriers against terror attack at Old Town Square

    Prague City Hall has installed large concrete barriers on the city’s Old Town Square in the centre as a preventive measure against possible terrorist attacks.

    The barricades are placed at the edge of the square at the entrance to Pařížská Street. The so-called city blocks were purchased by the city council and cost tens of thousands of crowns.

  • Russia’s Neftekhimik Nizhnekamsk confirms talks with Jaromír Jágr

    Kontinental Hockey League club Neftekhimik Nizhnekamsk has confirmed that it is holding negotiations with Czech hockey legend Jaromír Jágr.

    The general manager for Russia’s Neftekhimik Nizhnekamsk, Rail Jakupov, told the daily Sports-Express that he was in talks with Jágr’s representatives, adding that they were waiting for his decision.

    The 45-year old Jágr said earlier that he was ready to play in Europe if he couldn’t find work in the North American NHL.

  • EFSA: Czech ‘rum’ contains carcinogen

    Traditional Czech ‘rum’ known as ‘tuzemák’ contains a carcinogenic ingredient, a report by the European Food Safety Authority has suggested. According to their analysis, the aroma in the alcoholic beverage contains carcinogen which can be harmful to consumers’ health.

    Agriculture Minister Marián Jurečka said that if the ingredient is banned by Brussels, the Czech Republic will be asking for an exemption so that the use can be continued.

    Tuzemák, which is produced from sugar beet spirit, had to be renamed after EU regulations stipulated that only spirits distilled from sugar-cane can be called rum.

  • Czech drug pervitin remains problem in Germany

    Cross-border trade in the Czech produced drug pervitin or methamphetamine remains a problem in Germany. According to a recent report by the German Federal Criminal Police Office, the uptake of pervitine is spreading mainly in the southern and eastern part of Germany which border on the Czech Republic.

    According to the German police, around five to ten tonnes of methamphetamine is produced in the Czech Republic each year. Last year, German police seized 62 kilogrammes of crystal methamphetamine, which was five tonnes less than in the previous year.

  • Czech foreign debt rises to 4.5 trillion crowns

    The Czech Republic’s total foreign debt rose by 47.4 billion crowns to nearly 4.5 trillion crowns in the second quarter of this year, accounting for 91.9 percent of gross domestic product, according to preliminary data released by the Czech National Bank on Wednesday. Year-on-year, the foreign debt was nearly 1.1 trillion crowns higher.

    The Czech Republic’s foreign debt has been gradually increasing for some time. It exceeded the four trillion crown mark for the first time this year. It crossed the two trillion mark in 2010, six years after reaching 1 trillion crowns for the first time.
