The state-owned company Lesy České republiky, which owns and manages roughly half of the country's forests, revealed gross profits of 3.34 billion crowns between January and July, a 8.4 percent increase year-on-year. In 2016, the figure counted 3.08 billion, spokeswoman Eva Jouklová confirmed. The firm increased not only sales but also its felling volume.
Prices in the lumber market had dropped, however, with a surplus of material following damages to tree from strong winds or bark beetle infestation; the Agriculture Ministry has introduced a ban on felling spruce and pine in November and December.

The country's Transport Ministry is planning on investing roughly 14 billion crowns in water transport up to 2023, according to a proposal to be discussed by the government at its regular cabinet meeting on Monday.
The long-term strategic plan would extend waterways on the Vltava and Labe Rivers to 338 kilometres.
Under changes, large vessels would be able to pass through Prague all the way up to Radotín, while the Labe water route would end in Pardubice.

The second day of the Laver Cup tournament in Prague saw Team Europe extend its lead over Team World to 9:3.
Federer and Nadal both won respective singles matches against Querrey and Sock and also their first-ever doubles together on Saturday evening to build the team's lead.
The Czech Republic's Tomáš Berdych suffered the only defeat for the squad, a close match that went down the wire to a super tiebreak against Nick Kyrgios.
Four matches remain on Sunday, each worth three points. The winning squad needs a total of 13 points to win.

Roger Federer defeated Sam Querrey in straight sets while Rafael Nadal edged Jack Sock in a super tiebreak to give Team Europe an additional four points in the Laver Cup. Matches on Saturday are worth two points each.
Two more matches will be played on Saturday night: Tomáš Berdych versus Nick Kyrgios, and in the doubles, a dream team of the world's two best players, Nadal and Federer, against Querrey and Sock.

Two adults and a child in a crowd of people attending Army Day at Letná Plain in Prague on Saturday were injured when a paratrooper lost control and landed on them instead of within a designated area.
Two suffered injuries and immediately received medical attention and were transported to hospital. The child, also struck, was taken to the doctor's by an accompanying adult.
The incident is being investigated by both the police and the military police. The spokeswoman for the General Staff of the Czech Armed Forces, Vlastimila Cyprisová, expressed regret over the accident.

The head of Prague's anti-drug unit Jaromír Badin has been named Police Officer of the Year for 2016. Badin and his team helped uncover dozens of crimes; the unit head is well-known for presentations to fellow officers and to Interior Ministry officials.
In his free time, he also meets with elementary and high school students, ČTK reported.
The survey to select the officer of the year is organized annually by the Interior Ministry; on Friday the results were announced in a special ceremony at Prague Castle's Spanish Hall.

Prestigious French magazine L'Equipe has ranked 21-year-old Czech striker Patrik Schick 20th in the world in its list of top 50 football players up to age of 21. The top spot went to Marco Asensio of Real Madrid.
Schick is on loan to Roma who will buy him by the end of one year from Sampdoria for an estimated 42 million euros. Last season, he scored 11 goals in the top flight.

President Miloš Zeman and his team of experts met with Justice Minister Robert Pelikán and his predecessor Helena Válková on Saturday to discuss a number of issues. It is, an all likelihood, the last meeting of its kind the head of state will have with members of the government ahead of the elections in October, the president's spokesman Jiří Ovčáček confirmed.
Issues to be discussed may include the so-called Stork's Nest affair, which the president already discussed separately with both the former finance minister Andrej Babiš, whose parliamentary immunity has been waived to face charges of subsidy fraud in the case, and with the justice minister, the Czech News Agency reported. The minister of the interior is due to meet with the president over the matter next week.

An arsonist set a series of fires along a route between Královo Pole and Žabovřesky in Brno, the Czech Republic's second-largest city, in the early hours of Saturday morning.
Firefighter were called to six locations where a total of five transport containers and 15 garbage cans had been set alight. The first call came at 05:15.
Damage resulting from the arson amounted to around 50,000 crowns but would have been higher had firefighters not acted quickly.
A motorcycle parked near one of the fires was partially damaged.
