An exhibition entitled “Masaryk in the Holy Land” opens in Israel’s Parliament on Tuesday on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the foundation of Czechoslovakia. The event will be opened by Senate chairman Milan Štěch and several other Czech senators, who are visiting Israel this week.
The exhibition recalls the contribution of the country’s first president, Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk, and his son, Jan, who later became foreign minister, to the creation of the state of Israel. It will run in the Knesset until the end of this year.

Four Czech players have advanced to the second round of the women’s singles at Wimbledon, including seventh seeded Karolína Plíšková, who defeated Britain’s Harriet Dart 7:6, 2:6 and 6:1. Other Czechs to secure spot in the Grand Slam’s second round are Barbora Strýcová, Lucie Šafářová and Kateřina Siniaková.
Two –time Wimbledon Champion Petra Kvitová win enter the tournament on Tuesday in a match against Aliksandra Sasnovich of Belarus.

An inspection conducted by the Czech Trade Inspection Office at the end of the school year has found that the majority of stores violated the law by selling alcohol to minors.
Inspectors say 60 percent of the stores they checked sold youngsters under-18 alcohol without requesting an ID. The worst situation was in the Olomouc and Moravian regions where teenagers were 100 percent successful in buying alcoholic beverages in all the stores they were sent to.
Stores caught selling alcohol to minors can be fined up to one million crowns.

The legendary rock band The Rolling Stones will perform at Prague’s Prague’s Letňany Airport on Wednesday, July 4. It is the band’s fifth concert in Prague.
They made their first appearance in the Czech capital in 1990 when they performed at the invitation of President Václav Havel in what was a symbolic celebration of the country’s newfound freedom.
The concert, at Prague’s Letňany airport, is part of the European leg of the band’s No Filter tour.

Karolina Plíšková advanced to the second round at Wimbledon after beating Britain’s Harriet Darth 7:6, 2:6, 6:1. The Czech eight seed has often struggled at Wimbledon, losing in the second round for the past five years.
Her sister Kristyna Plíšková dropped out after losing to Romanian Alexandra Dulgheru 4:6, 6:1, 2:6.

The country’s first post-1989 justice minister Dagmar Burešová died at the weekend, at the age of 88, the ctk news agency reported.
After 1969 Burešová defended many dissidents persecuted by the regime in court, among them writer Milan Kundera, the mother of Jan Palach or Ivan Medek, who was later chancellor to president Vaclav Havel.
After the fall of communism in 1989, Burešová was appointed justice minister and played a big role in reforming the country’s justice system.

An explosion in a plant producing airbag components in the town of Jablunka, in the eastern part of the country, injured two people, one of them seriously, the ctk news agency reported.
The blast which occurred early on Monday, shook the plant’s main building, which was immediately evacuated. Experts later declared it unsafe due to structural damage.
The cause of the incident is being investigated. The damage is expected to reach millions of crowns.

Around forty visitors to the Karlovy Vary Film Festival were treated for food poisoning at the weekend after eating at one of the festival stalls, the ctk news agency reported.All received medical attention at the Karlovy Vary hospital and were released within hours.
The incident is being investigated by the local hygiene authorities. It is thought that contaminated water may have been the problem.
