    Hollywood actor and director Tim Robbins, a special guest at this year’s ongoing international film festival in Karlovy Vary, is due to perform there on Wednesday evening with his group, The Rogues Gallery Band.

    The Academy Award-winning star of “The Shawshank Redemption” received the A-list Czech festival’s Crystal Globe for outstanding artistic contribution to world cinema at the opening ceremony on Monday.

    Firefighters have extinguished fires near a railway line between the northern Bohemian towns of Lovosice and Ústí nad Labem, but both domestic and international train travel in the area has halted.

    Police have also closed a road running alongside the rails. Until their investigation is complete, drivers should expect heavy congestion, especially along routes from Ústí nad Labem and Děčín to Dresden, Germany.

    Minister of Health Adam Vojtěch has dismissed the director of Na Bulovce hospital, one of nine people facing prosecution for having allegedly conspired to manipulate public contracts to Prague hospitals.

    Among the accused is the director of Na Františku hospital, who resigned of his own accord earlier this week. Minister Vojtěch said in a statement on Wednesday he intends to review all supply contracts to public hospitals and revise contracts which the health ministry itself manages directly.

    The traditional pilgrimage festival marking the legacy of Saints Cyril and Methodius, Greek missionaries who brought Christianity to the Czech lands, gets underway at Velehrad in South Moravia on Wednesday.

    The event, called the People of Goodwill Days, includes a number of cultural events, lectures and is traditionally attended by tens of thousands of believers. It will culminate on Thursday with a national pilgrimage and a celebratory mass.

    Two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitová has been knocked out of the first round of the women’s singles at Wimbledon, after losing to Aliksandra Sasnovich of Belarus 4:6, 6:4 and 0:6.

    Five Czechs have advanced to the second round, including seventh seeded Karolína Plíšková, who will face Viktoria Azarenka of Belarus in her next match on Wednesday.

    Temperatures dropped to record lows in some parts of the Czech Republic in the early hours of Tuesday. The lowest temperature, minus 7.8 degrees Celsius, was recorded at Luční Bouda in the Krkonoše mountains in north Bohemia. Freezing temperatures were also registered corded in the Šumava mountains in the south west of the country. Records were broken at 30 stations in operation for 30 years or more.

    US Oscar-winning director Barry Levinson arrived at Karlovy Vary International Film Festival on Tuesday. Mr. Levinson, who won the Academy Award for best director for Rain Man in 1989, is set receive the Crystal Globe for outstanding artistic contribution to world cinema.

    Rain Man and Levinson’s 1998 political satire Wag the Dog will both screen at the festival, with introductions from the director.

    Some 60,000 bikers are expected to take part in the Harley-Davidson celebrations due to start in Prague on Thursday. The gathering, marking the 115th anniversary of the legendary US company, will take place at the city’s Výstaviště exhibition grounds until July 8.

    The annual event will include a traditional Bikers’ Parade through the centre of the city on Saturday. Dozens of roads will be closed for traffic and several trams lines will be rerouted because of the ride.

    In hockey, San Jose Sharks Czech attacker Tomáš Hertl has signed a new four-year contract with the club. The contract is reported to be worth 5.7 million US dollars annually. The 24-year-old-Czech scored 22 goals and provided 24 assists in the last season.

    The Czech state-owned passenger train operator České dráhy has signed a contract with Siemens-Škoda Transportation to supply 50 passenger cars to operate on long-distance lines. The contract is valued at nearly three billion crowns. The first 200 km/h coaches should be delivered by 2021, the operator announced on Tuesday, adding that the purchase of new passenger cars should improve the company’s competitiveness in interstate transport services.
