Czech police officers detained 4,742 people during transit migration last year, Police President Martin Vondrášek said on Monday. It was more than 17,000 fewer than in the previous year, but also about 3,400 more than in 2021. Because of the increasing number of refugees, Czechia introduced checks on its border with Slovakia last October, which have continued until now. They were last extended by the government in early January and are due to last until at least 2 February.

The random checks are intended to prevent transit migration through Czechia to other EU countries.

Czechia has repeatedly proven itself to be an honest and reliable partner to the other member states during its two-decade membership in the European Union, Prime Minister Petr Fiala said on Monday at a conference entitled 20 Years of Making Europe at Prague’s Liechtenstein Palace.

Mr. Fiala said Czechia, which joined the EU on May 1, 2004, has shown that it can behave appropriately in crises and is ready to help the weak and show solidarity. He also said that despite it always being part of Europe, the country could only start establishing relations with European communities after the Velvet Revolution.

Speaking at the event’s opening ceremony, Minister for European Affairs Martin Dvořák said EU accession was an expression of the ambition to actively shape the future of Europe.

A two-year-old-boy with a rare genetic disorder, for whose treatment people donated over 150 million crowns, was flown to France for treatment at the weekend. Martin was diagnosed with a severe form of AADC syndrome, which affects the metabolism of neurotransmitters in the brain. It is a very rare genetic disorder with only about 120 confirmed cases worldwide. Previous treatments only alleviated the worst symptoms of the disease, but could not cure it. The treatment is not covered by health insurance and costs the equivalent of 100 million crowns. When news of the case spread on social networks people collected 150 million for the child within days.

The treatment in France is expected to take place at the end of January and will be attended by doctors from Czechia. Martin will remain in hospital for approximately two weeks for observation before coming home.

Over 100,000 people downloaded the eDoklady application to create an electronic ID card on their mobile phone over the weekend, according to the Digital Information Agency. The new app became available for download on Saturday and many of those who tried to download it experienced problems due to server overload. According to Deputy Prime Minister for Digitization Ivan Bartoš problems with Microsoft's Azure cloud technology, which affected all of Europe, also contributed to the outages.

The eDoklady app can be downloaded from the official Google Play and App Stores. As of January 20, 2024, the electronic ID card should be accepted by all state administration bodies and some municipalities. The plastic cards will remain as an alternative option even after the digital app is accepted across the board.

Exactly one month after the tragic event at the Prague Faculty of Arts, Charles University held an event to honour the memory of the victims at a memorial site outside the building. On this day, the main building where the tragedy occurred was partially opened to students and teachers for creative workshops, meetings and musical performances which are to help them cope with the tragedy. Nevertheless, the return to the building will be gradual,  with many lectures due to take place in other facilities or online in the coming semester.

On December 21, a lone gunman who was a student of the faculty, went on a rampage, killing 14 people and injuring 25 before committing suicide. The motive for the horrendous crime, the worst in the country's history, remains unclear.
