Education Minister Mikuláš Bek on Monday met with representatives of school unions to discuss funding issues which they claim will threaten the basic operation of schools in many areas. According to the unions, the funds earmarked for schools for this year do not respect previous agreements and in many cases would necessitate laying off essential non-teaching staff such as janitors, cleaners, cooks and IT workers. Minister Bek said that he believed the government would top-up the missing finances in schools where the situation was critical and where local finances were unavailable. School unions are to attend a meeting with Prime Minister Petr Fiala on Tuesday. Some school unions have threatened strike action if the situation is not resolved.

The government will make a decision on the possible taxation of still wine by the end of June at the latest, Finance Minister Zbyněk Stanjura told Czech Television. Still wine is now the only alcohol without excise duty, and the ruling coalition is divided on whether or not it should be taxed. The finance ministry has reportedly prepared four options for introducing an excise tax on still wine, but the Christian Democrats remain vehemently against taxing it on the grounds that it would threaten the future of the Moravian wine industry. The opposition is also strongly against a tax on still wine.

The Czech foreign minister, Jan Lipavský, has responded to a comment by US presidential candidate Donald Trump, who said he would “encourage” Russia to attack any NATO member that fails to make a sufficient financial contribution to the alliance. Mr. Lipavský said on Sunday that NATO was currently at its strongest ever, “both because of the strong transatlantic link and because of the domestic deterrence and defence tasks that European allies are performing.”

The Czech foreign policy chief said that, in the face of the biggest threat since WWII, Czechia was increasing defence spending and acquiring “new capabilities, many of which originate in the US.”

Mr. Lipavský also said he hoped Mr. Trump did not hear what the leaders of Czechia’s ANO party had to say on spending on F-35s. The grouping’s leader Andrej Babiš says the country does not need the US-made planes.
