The Museum of West Bohemia in Pilsen has announced that a treasure trove of hundreds of gold and silver coins from the 14th century were found in a forest near the Kladruby monastery in the Tachov region.

The museum will present the find to journalists on Wednesday, a spokesperson said. An unnamed man found the coins in March when walking through the forest in Stříbrsko. A gold coin and several silver ones were exposed after being dug up by wild pigs, the museum spokesperson said.

Among the coins are gold ducats bearing the image of Charles IV, Albrecht of Austria, Rupert of the Palatinate, and from the Hanseatic city of Lübeck, and silver groschen of Wenceslas II, John of Luxembourg and Charles IV. The trove was likely buried in the late 1370s.

Four panels in an open-air Prague exhibition dedicated to the anti-communist politician Milada Horáková, executed 70 years ago following a show trial, were destroyed on Sunday night.

The exhibition was prepared by the Kampa Museum, located in a park by the Vltava River. Jiří Pospišíl, chairman of the foundation that manages the museum, condemned the vandalism.

Horáková was a democratic politician in Masaryk’s First Republic and a resistance figure during the war, imprisoned by the Nazis in the Terezín concentration camp. She was the only female political prisoner executed by the Communist regime.

Minister of Regional Development Klára Dostálová will suggest the state offer financial support for Czech tour guides, whose revenues have fallen some 90 percent on average during the coronavirus pandemic.

The deferral of social and health insurance payments for self-employed people ends in September. Without state support, most guides will be unable to support themselves, the Association of Guides said earlier in a press release.

Prime Minister Andrej Babiš (ANO) has condemned the violent crackdown of Belarusian police against peaceful protesters in Minsk following polls showing Aleksandr Lukashenko had been re-elected to a sixth term as president.

Babiš said on Twitter that such actions have no place in modern Europe, and “Belarusian citizens have the right to freedom of speech and democracy”. Most Czech party leaders have expressed similar concerns.

The Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the presidential elections in Belarus could not be called “free and democratic”, given the arrest of a potential presidential candidate, the subsequent imprisonment of an opposition candidate and that the OSCE Election Observation Mission was not allowed to fully perform its functions.

Lukashenko said later on Monday that the protesters were organised by telephone from the Czech Republic, Poland and Britain, the Belarusian agency BelTA reported. The Belarusian police allegedly used Czech-made flashbangs against the demonstrators. Ministrerof Foreign Affairs Tomáš Petříček said no licence for the export of such grenades was issued.

Federation chairman František Lukl (non-party) said the governing coalition failed to inform municipalities about the number of infected people in their areas and cut some funds without warning. He has called for the Federation to have a representative on the new coronavirus crisis team.

Sunday’s increase in the number of coronavirus cases is the lowest in the past two weeks, at just 122, according to Health Ministry statistics released on Monday. However, lower figures over the past two days are related to the fact that fewer tests are conducted at weekends.

The number of current detected cases increased to 5,081, a record high since the start of the epidemic. The total number of known cases of the virus since the start of March stood at 18,355 on Monday morning. To date 390 people have died with Covid-19 and 12,785 have recovered from the disease.

According to the country’s main hygiene officer, Jarmila Rážová, the situation is not alarming, because the number of people hospitalised with Covid-19 is not increasing.
