Sixty-two percent of Czechs consider the proposed state budget deficit of 389 billion crowns unacceptable, according to the outcome of a flash poll by the Median agency. Twenty-two percent find it acceptable, while the rest are undecided, Median says.
The two junior parties in the ruling coalition, the Motorists and Freedom and Direct Democracy, are also pushing for a reduction of the deficit. The Motorists' party has proposed changes that would cut the deficit by 20 billion crowns. Freedom and Direct Democracy leader Tomio Okamura is proposing abolishing humanitarian benefits for Ukrainian refugees which he said would save 12 billion crowns.
Coalition talks on possible cuts will continue on Monday.
Finance Minister Alena Schillerová (ANO) is open to negotiations but says there is room for cuts amounting to only a few billion crowns at most.
The government must submit the budget proposal to the Chamber of Deputies by the end of September. Finance Minister Schillerová wants to conclude the government-level debate by September 21.

The net minimum monthly wage in Czechia was not enough last year to cover basic living expenses and rent. Depending on where people lived, it would have had to be 7 to 24 percent higher – an increase of around 1,250 to 4,280 crowns.
The finding stems from an analysis by the Research Institute for Labour and Social Affairs (RILSA). The institute first assessed the situation two years ago and says affordability has improved to some extent since then.
The gross minimum wage last year stood at 20,800 crowns, equivalent to 42.2 percent of the average gross wage. The net minimum wage was 17,837 crowns.
The government is due to decide on Monday how much the minimum wage will increase over the next two years.

Hrzánský Palace in Prague’s Hradčany district is reopening to the public on Saturday, with this year’s tours focusing on its artistic history. The government-owned palace was associated with painters Ferdinand Engelmüller and Jan Slavíček during the 20th century. Visitors can see its ceremonial rooms as well as Slavíček’s studio, where he worked from 1937 until his death in 1970. The building has a much longer history: medieval architect Petr Parléř once owned a house on the site, while future Czechoslovak president Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk briefly lived there in the late 19th century. Guided tours are free and run throughout Saturday.
