Events are taking place across Czechia this weekend to mark the upcoming fourth anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
In Prague, several thousand people gathered in Old Town Square on Saturday afternoon for an event called Together for Ukraine. The gathering was organised by the groups Post Bellum, People in Need, Million Moments for Democracy, Díky, že můžem, and the European Congress of Ukrainians.
President Petr Pavel, who spoke at the event, thanked Czechs for their support for Ukraine in its fight against Russia. He said the nature of any future peace would shape Europe’s future for a long time and called on the Czech government to continue supporting Ukraine until peace is achieved. He also welcomed the continuation of the Czech-led ammunition initiative.
Ukrainian Ambassador to the Czech Republic Vasyl Zvarych also addressed the crowd. He said Ukraine is able to hold its defensive line partly thanks to the support of Czechs. Like the president, he spoke about the solidarity of individuals and the initiative through which Ukraine has been receiving artillery shells.
Earlier in the day, a march carrying a large Ukrainian flag went from the National Museum to Old Town Square, recalling the blue-and-yellow banner that previously hung on the museum building as a sign of solidarity.
Replicas of drones used by Russia in attacks on Ukraine are also being displayed in the squares of nearly twenty Czech towns, highlighting strikes that have also targeted civilians.

People who have experienced homelessness die on average 16 years earlier than the rest of the Czech population, according to an analysis by the Platform for Social Housing.
The study also found that the lives of one in seven people who have experienced homelessness end directly on the street.
Representatives of the Salvation Army and Caritas Czech Republic say the solution lies in a functioning benefits system, social services and the availability of affordable housing. A new Housing Support Act, aimed at people in housing distress, should help address the issue.
The analysis is based on data from 2010 to 2022 provided by the Institute of Health Information and Statistics (ÚZIS).

Czech tennis player Jakub Menšík defeated world number two Jannik Sinner 7–6, 2–6, 6–3 in the quarterfinals of the prestigious tournament in Doha.
Menšík struck 29 winners and dictated the pace with a precise forehand, managing to play at a higher tempo than Sinner.
“I knew who I was up against, but honestly I don’t even know how I did it. I went on court to win, not just to enjoy the match,” Menšík said in a post-match interview.
He is the first Czech player ever to defeat Sinner.

The government will take steps to gain full control of energy group ČEZ, Industry and Trade Minister Karel Havlíček (ANO) said during Friday’s presentation of the cabinet’s economic strategy.
The state plans to buy out shares held by minority shareholders, although the minister has not yet specified concrete measures. He has previously indicated that preparatory steps would begin later this year.
The state, through the Finance Ministry, currently holds around 70 percent of shares in ČEZ, with the remaining stake owned by minority shareholders. Acquiring those shares would make the state the sole owner of the company.

Prime Minister Andrej Babiš (ANO) says he considers the reform of the European Union’s emissions trading system to be the Czech government’s main priority.
At a press briefing outlining the government's economic strategy, Babiš described the emissions allowance system as an “absolute disaster,” saying Czechia has so far lost nearly CZK 160 billion because of it. He said he was putting a lot of effort into forming a coalition of countries that he referred to as “friends of European competitiveness”.
According to the prime minister Italy, Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Poland and Hungary support the Czech position calling for changes to the EU’s ETS1 emissions trading system.
Other priority areas include energy, healthcare and construction aimed at increasing housing affordability.

The creators of the film Broken Voices have decided to change the name of the main character for future screenings. The move follows a coplaint by one of the victims in the real-life case that inspired the story who identified herself in the film, partly due to the use of the same first name.
The decision was made by the production company Endorfilm together with the film’s co-producers and director and screenwriter Ondřej Provazník..
According to the producers, the name change is intended to prevent misunderstandings and to ensure that public debate remains focused primarily on child protection and the prevention of abuse of power. Provazník had previously expressed regret that the film had caused psychological distress to some real-life victims.
The film is inspired by the case of convicted choirmaster Bohumil Kulínský.

Veterinarians have confirmed bird flu at a commercial egg-laying hen farm in the municipality of Kosičky in the Hradec Králové region. The facility houses more than 230,000 laying hens. All poultry will have to be culled. Due to the large number of birds and complex logistics, the culling will begin early next week.
In recent years, this is the largest farm affected. The previous biggest outbreak in the Czech Republic was discovered at the end of December 2022 at a large-scale poultry farm in Brod nad Tichou in the Tachov region, where all 742,000 hens were culled due to the H5N1 virus subtype.
Veterinarians also confirmed bird flu in Kosičky a week ago at a duck farm. It was the first outbreak in a commercial breeding facility this year. The new outbreak is located approximately 500 meters away. Veterinarians will establish a three-kilometer protection zone and a ten-kilometer surveillance zone around the site.
