    Thousands of volunteers around Czechia are taking part in a spring edition of the rubbish clearance this weekend, organised by Czech Union for Nature Conservation. More than 273 such operations are taking place all around the country.

    The rubbish clearance drives are part of the international campaign Clean Up the World and have been taking place in Czechia since 1993.

    General Emil Boček, the last living Czech airman who served in Britain’s RAF during WWII, died on Saturday at the age of 100.

    The veteran pilot served with the RAF’s 312 and 310 squadrons and participated in over two dozen operational flights. After the war, he was persecuted by the communist regime and was only recognized and awarded for his services after the Velvet Revolution in 1989.

    He received many awards including the highest Czech state distinction Order of the White Lion. Emil Boček had lived in the town of his birth, Brno, where he was an honorary citizen.

    An official delegation from the Czech Republic, headed by speaker of the Chamber of Deputies, Markéta Pekarová Adamová, arrived in Taiwan on Saturday on a five-day visit aimed at boosting mutual ties between the two states.

    The 160-strong delegation included representatives of some 100 Czech companies, as well as academia, lawmakers and others. Mrs Pekarová Adamová was welcomed at the airport by her counterpart You Si-kun and Foreign Minister Joseph Wu.

    In the course of the visit, the Czech Lower House speaker is scheduled to address the Taiwanese parliament and hold talks with President Tsai Ing-wen. She will also attend the opening of the Czech Hub in Taipei, and give a speech at National Taiwan University.

    The traditional Easter market opens on Prague’s Old Town Square on Saturday. Visitors will find stalls selling food and a wide variety of Easter products including hand-painted eggs, wooden toys and decorated gingerbread.

    An outdoor stage has been set up for the performances of choirs, folk music and dance ensembles from around the country. Easter markets also get underway on Wenceslas Square and Náměstí Republiky. They will run until April 16.

    The Czech national football squad defeated Poland 3-1 in their first UEFA Euro 2024 qualifying match on Friday night, securing three points at the Sinobo Stadium in Prague.

    Czechs Ladislav Krejčí and Tomáš Čvančara scored two goals within the first three minutes of their Group E encounter, before a third was scored in the second half by Jan Kuchta.

    The Czechs will next take on Moldova on Monday.

    The shortage of some vital medicines on the Czech market could be solved by supplies from South Korea, the speaker of the Chamber of Deputies, Markéta Pekarová Adamová, told the Czech News Agency on Saturday after her visit to Seoul.

    According to Mrs Pekarová Adamová it will take at most a few months before antibiotics or children's syrups produced in South Korea could enter the Czech market. She also said they will first have to be assessed by the State Institute for Drug Control.

    Czechia and other EU countries have been facing shortages of some medicines since last December. According to Health Minister Vlastimil Válek the problem will last until the summer holidays.

    An Afghan national has been handed a prison sentence of 22 years in a high-security jailhouse and subsequent expulsion from the country for rape and attempted murder. The Afghan national visited Karlovy Vary on New Year’s Eve last year, where he brutally attacked two women stabbing one, who narrowly escaped death, and raping and attempting to strangle another. The prosecution accused him of attempted double murder and rape. The Afghan national is a migrant who lives in Germany, where he is seeking asylum.

    The Big Brother awards for the biggest snoopers in 2022 went to Microsoft, Seznam.cz and the Supreme Administrative Court. The organization Iuridicum Remedium hands out the awards to companies violating people’s privacy or selling personal data to third parties. A positive mention at the ceremony went to the company NoLog for providing free services that enable secure electronic communication without users having to pay for it with their personal data.
