The Czech Republic’s footballers will face Denmark on Tuesday night for a place at this year’s World Cup in North America. The Danes are considered the favourites for the playoffs final, which will take place at Sparta Prague’s stadium.
Coach Miroslav Koubek is expected to make changes to his starting line-up after an underwhelming first half against Ireland in last week’s playoffs semi-finals, which Czechia eventually won on penalties.
The Czechs last qualified for the World Cup two decades ago.

The government has dismissed Ondřej Soška, commissioner general for the Czech Republic’s participation in Expo 2025, Foreign Minister Petr Macinka told reporters on Monday.
The Czech pavilion project in Osaka faced criticism last year over insufficient external funding and rising construction costs. Macinka said the project ended with a significant loss compared to the approved budget.
Soška rejected the claims, telling the Czech News Agency that his dismissal—just one day before the end of his mandate—was politically motivated and aimed at discrediting Czechia’s successful participation at the expo under the former administration. He maintained that the original planned budget of roughly CZK 500 million had not been exceeded.

The governments of the Czech Republic and Slovakia are due to hold joint consultations for the first time in three years on Monday.
Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš and his Slovak counterpart Robert Fico are expected to sign a memorandum aimed at deepening cooperation between the two administrations. According to the Czech government office, the document is intended to pave the way for closer collaboration in foreign policy, the economy, defense, digitalization, tourism, and sports.
The agenda also includes discussions on boosting competitiveness, transport infrastructure, and energy security.
The last intergovernmental consultations took place in March 2023. About a year later, the Fiala administration suspended the meetings due to differing views on key foreign policy issues.

The government has added Russian national Konstantin Rogač to the Czech national sanctions list, Foreign Minister Petr Macinka announced after Monday’s cabinet meeting.
According to Minister Macinka, Rogač holds a long-term residence permit in the Czech Republic and has been involved over the past three years in arranging insurance for oil tankers operating within Russia’s so-called “shadow fleet.” The fleet, used to transport Russian oil, is already subject to EU sanctions.
The Czech Republic will push for Konstantin Rogač to be placed on the EU sanctions list as well.
The Czech national sanctions list was created on the basis of the Czech Magnitsky Act approved by Parliament in 2022. It allows the government to impose sanctions on foreign entities violating human rights, supporting terrorism, or committing cybercrimes. The sanctions include asset-freezing and a ban on entering the country.

The government of Prime Minister Andrej Babiš (ANO) has approved 16 nominations to ambassadorial posts, Foreign Minister Petr Macinka (Motorists) told reporters after Monday’s cabinet session. The list will now be submitted to President Petr Pavel.
Earlier this year, the cabinet revoked a decision by the previous government of Petr Fiala (Civic Democrats) on diplomatic postings, with Minister Macinka pledging a more transparent selection aligned with the new administration’s priorities. Ambassadorial appointments require the signature of the president, who has indicated readiness for compromise, while supporting the government’s aim to strengthen Czechia’s representation in key countries.
The nominations cover postings to Ethiopia, Qatar, India, Vietnam, Finland, Egypt, Peru, Portugal, Montenegro, Italy, Chile, North Macedonia, the United States, and permanent missions in New York, Geneva, and Paris.

The government is considering means of addressing the sharp rise in energy prices in connection with the war in the Middle East. The cabinet debated several options at its Monday session, among them capping fuel retailers’ margins or reducing excise duties on fuel. The cabinet is expected to select a preferred variant at an extraordinary meeting on Thursday, also in view of the fact that EU energy ministers are set to hold consultations on a coordinated response to rising energy costs on Tuesday.
The government on Monday also approved a loan of 100,000 tons of crude oil from state emergency reserves to refineries, citing supply constraints on the IKL/TAL pipeline. Despite sharp price increases, fuel demand in the Czech Republic has risen.

EU energy ministers are set to coordinate their response to rising energy costs, as the bloc grapples with market instability linked to the conflict in the Middle East.
While energy supply in the European Union remains relatively secure at this stage, the EU—as a net energy importer—is being significantly affected by high and volatile prices, according to a document prepared for Tuesday’s ministerial meeting.
The conflict poses a dual challenge for the EU: ensuring energy security while addressing a sharp rise in energy prices. The document stresses the importance of avoiding “uncoordinated and fragmented national responses” as well as market-disrupting signals. Measures with cross-border impacts, it warns, could further exacerbate market instability.
The talks will be held via a videoconference call, with the Czech Republic represented by Industry and Trade Minister Karel Havlíček.

Demand for fuel in the Czech Republic has increased despite a sharp rise in prices, according to preliminary estimates from the Czech Association of Petroleum Industry and Trade (ČAPPO).
Consumption of diesel rose by roughly 25 percent during March compared to usual levels, while petrol demand increased by up to 15 percent, ČAPPO spokesperson Václav Loula said on Monday.
He stressed that there is no risk of fuel shortages.
Analysts attribute the surge in demand to motorists stocking up in advance, as well as increased interest from drivers in neighboring countries, where fuel prices are higher.
