Czech goaltender Daniel Vladař played a decisive role as the Philadelphia Flyers secured a 3–2 shootout win over the Carolina Hurricanes and clinched the final Eastern Conference playoff spot. The 28-year-old stopped 24 of 26 shots and, after conceding twice in the opening period, shut the door the rest of the way. Vladař then delivered in the shootout, denying all Carolina attempts to seal the victory. Philadelphia recovered from a slow start, with goals from Matvei Michkov and Trevor Zegras erasing a two-goal deficit. With overtime scoreless, Tyson Foerster netted the deciding shootout goal. The Flyers have now won five of their last six games and return to the playoffs for the first time since the 2019/20 season. They will face the Pittsburgh Penguins in the opening round.

Researchers from Czech Technical University in Prague are developing advanced drones designed to protect critical infrastructure and mimic the movement of bird flocks. The team, led by Martin Saska, focuses on systems built entirely from European technologies to reduce risks of espionage. One project aims to create secure drones capable of monitoring sites such as power plants or industrial facilities, even in GPS-denied environments. Another explores swarm flight inspired by birds, using artificial intelligence to enable drones to move quickly and avoid collisions. The modular systems could also be used for inspections, search operations, and surveillance over large areas.

Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš (ANO) says a government delegation will attend the NATO summit in Ankara in July, questioning the role of President Petr Pavel, who intends to lead the mission. Babiš argued it is neither logical nor feasible for both to attend together, citing security concerns and the government’s primary role in foreign policy. Opposition Civic Democratic Party leader Martin Kupka criticised the dispute, calling for cooperation instead of “petty quarrels.” Pavel has said he plans to head the delegation in line with his constitutional role, while Babiš insists the government will decide its composition after a May NATO meeting.

Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš (ANO) has urged the EU to grant additional free emissions allowances to industries most affected by the ETS 1 system. In a letter sent to European leaders, he argued the measure would help maintain the bloc’s competitiveness while supporting decarbonisation. Babiš proposed that companies receive free allowances on condition they commit to reducing emissions. The European Commission, led by Ursula von der Leyen, is already considering adjustments to the system to improve stability. The EU’s emissions trading scheme is designed to cut carbon output by making pollution more costly, but critics say it puts heavy pressure on energy-intensive sectors.

Czech carmaker Škoda Auto reported a strong start to the year, with global deliveries rising 14 percent to 271,900 vehicles in the first quarter, according to parent company Volkswagen. The wider group saw an overall decline of four percent, mainly due to weaker demand in China and North America. Škoda’s electric vehicle sales surged by 92 percent to 51,800 units, contrasting with an eight percent drop in EV deliveries across Volkswagen. The company is also shifting strategy, planning to exit the Chinese market and focus more on India and Southeast Asia. The move reflects long-term changes in global demand and growing competition.

The Czech government has approved a draft law allowing it to regulate fuel prices more easily during crises. Finance Minister Alena Schillerová (ANO) said the measure would enable future cabinets to act swiftly through government decrees, similar to existing rules for electricity and gas. The proposal responds to sharp fuel price increases following the outbreak of war in Iran. The new system would replace current emergency measures under which the Finance Ministry sets daily maximum prices for petrol and diesel. Schillerová wants the bill fast-tracked in parliament so it can take effect as soon as possible.
