Archaeologists have found the remains of several prehistoric settlements and over 300 artefacts dating from the Late Stone Age to the Iron Age during excavations ahead of the D55 motorway construction between Kokory and Přerov in eastern Czechia. Notable discoveries include a 7,000-year-old stone axe fragment, a bronze brooch from the 3rd–2nd century BC, and a large clay-extraction site once used for pottery and building materials. Researchers say the finds could reveal new insights into early settlement in the region.

The construction of the motorway section linking Olomouc and Přerov is due to begin next year.

President Petr Pavel has granted pardons to two women, the presidential office announced on Friday. Both were convicted of drug-related offenses, and in both cases, he chose to commute the remainder of their sentences, marking the fifth time he has used this constitutional power. In his two and a half years in office, Pavel has issued a total of 19 pardons.

The first woman, aged 76, assisted in sending drugs to her grandson in prison at his request. The second woman, aged 23, provided her friend with ecstasy at a nightclub, which she also consumed, leading to her friend’s death the following day. Neither of them have any prior convictions.

The emerging coalition of ANO, the Freedom and Direct Democracy (SPD) party, and the Motorists’ party plans major changes to pension savings, according to the news server Seznam Zprávy. The parties promise to expand state-supported retirement schemes and encourage younger people to start saving earlier. ANO proposes higher state contributions for those under 30 and lower fees for pension funds. SPD wants to establish a state-run pension fund with guaranteed returns and to restore state contributions for retirees. The Motorists’ party calls for a voluntary pillar promoting investments in socially beneficial sectors such as healthcare and infrastructure. The idea of stronger state involvement in pension savings is not new. The previous government also promised a public pension fund and lower management fees, but those plans never materialized. Economists note that the success of the new reform will depend on details such as what assets the fund will invest in and who will manage it.

Less than a day after becoming Speaker of the Czech Chamber of Deputies, Tomio Okamura of the Freedom and Direct Democracy (SPD) party ordered the removal of the Ukrainian flag from the parliament building. The flag had flown there since the start of Russia’s invasion in 2022 as a symbol of solidarity with Ukraine. Soon after it was taken down, deputies from the Civic Democrats (ODS), Mayors and Independents (STAN) and the Pirate Party hung new Ukrainian flags from their club windows in protest. Former Speaker Markéta Pekarová Adamová of TOP 09 called Okamura’s action “a disgraceful gesture” against Ukraine and Czech values. STAN leader Vít Rakušan and ODS deputy leader Martin Kupka also condemned the move, saying it trampled solidarity and Czechia’s pro-Western orientation.

Okamura said on Czech Television that his party had promised only Czech flags would fly on public buildings, and that he was fulfilling that pledge. He added he had “nothing against Israel,” but the Chamber’s leadership may later discuss whether to keep the Israeli flag, which was raised after the Hamas terror attack in October 2023.

Newly elected Speaker of the Czech Chamber of Deputies Tomio Okamura, leader of the Freedom and Direct Democracy (SPD) party, has ordered the removal of the Ukrainian flag from the parliament building. The flag had flown there since the start of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 as a symbol of solidarity with the attacked country. Former Speaker Markéta Pekarová Adamová of TOP 09 called the move “a disgraceful gesture” against both Ukraine and the values shared by Czechia. Leaders of the former government parties, including Vít Rakušan (Mayors and Independents), Martin Kupka (Civic Democratic Party) and Marek Výborný (Christian Democrats), condemned Okamura’s decision, describing it as an act that undermines solidarity and the country’s pro-Western orientation. Alongside the Czech and EU flags, the Israeli flag continues to fly on the building — raised in October 2023 after the Hamas terror attacks.

President Petr Pavel has accepted the resignation of Prime Minister Petr Fiala’s cabinet at Prague Castle and asked it to continue performing its duties until a new government is appointed. He thanked Fiala’s cabinet for managing crises triggered by Russia’s war in Ukraine and praised its foreign and security policies. Fiala said his government would ensure a smooth and dignified transfer of power and that it was leaving the country in better condition than it had taken over four years ago.
