Police investigate murder of Chinese man

A Chinese man who was shot and injured on a Prague street on Sunday night has died. Witnesses say the man was withdrawing cash from a bank machine when another Asian fired several shots at him. The attacker escaped and the twenty eight year old injured man died in hospital several hours later. He did not recover consciousness and the identity of his attacker remains unknown. Police are investigating the case.

Iranian refugee given temporary visa

An Iranian refugee who has spent over three months in the transit section of Prague's Ruzyne Airport has been granted entry into the Czech Republic. Ali Reza Yadollahi who was refused political asylum in the Czech Republic several months ago has been issued a temporary visa and will be allowed to spend the holidays with relatives living in the country. Yadollahi has requested that a court rule on the Interior Ministry's procedure in evaluating his asylum request. He reportedly faces persecution and imprisonment in his homeland.

Field hospital staff back home

The last of the Czech field hospital staff has returned home from Basra, southern Iraq. They arrived at Prague's Ruzyne Airport late Sunday where they were welcomed by the Czech defence minister Miroslav Kostelka. The field hospital has served in various parts of the world since 1999 and the defence ministry said it was unable to find enough people to continue to rotate personnel. In the meantime, the Czech Republic has sent 80 military police officers to Basra. They arrived on Sunday and have been stationed at the Shaiba military base just outside Basra where they are to help train local officers.

Increased security during the holiday season

The Czech Interior Ministry plans to increase security around key institutions in the Czech Republic during the Christmas holidays. Police presidium spokeswoman Blanka Kosinova said the measures were being taken in view of an increased threat of terrorist attacks worldwide. There are no indications to suggest that an attack is being planned against a target in the Czech Republic, Kosinova said, emphasizing that these were precautionary measures. There will be increased security around churches, shopping centres, key institutions and airports.
