Three die in plane crash near Brno
Three people died on Saturday morning when their small plane crashed near the village of Sokolnice soon after takeoff from Turany airport, Brno. All three people on board were Germans, and their plane was bound for Germany. The cause of the accident is not yet known.
Poll suggests Motejl most popular choice for president
The most popular choice to succeed Vaclav Havel as president is ombudsman Otakar Motejl, according to a survey carried out at the beginning of this month by the CVVM polling agency. Some 45 percent of Czechs would like to see Mr Motejl become president, the poll suggests. Of the official candidates for the post, the most popular is Petr Pithart of the Christian Democrats, with 37 percent support. The former leader of the Civic Democrats, Vaclav Klaus, came third in the poll, with 31 percent. Prime Minister Vladimir Spidla has said that if a bicameral vote in January to elect a president fails, the constitution could be changed to allow for a direct election. President Vaclav Havel's term concludes at the end of next month.
Flight delayed over hoax call to CSA office in Copenhagen
A flight from Prague to Copenhagen was delayed on Friday evening when an anonymous hoax caller told the Czech Airlines (CSA) office in Copenhagen that there was a bomb on board the plane. No bomb was found, and all 78 passengers flew to the Danish capital on a different plane and accompanied by special security.
Frenchman caught trying to carry kidnapped woman across border
Police at the Rozvadov border crossing in west Bohemia have foiled an attempt by a French citizen to kidnap a 21-year-old Czech woman and carry her across the border and on to Luxembourg. On Thursday night the Frenchman forced the woman into his car in Rychnov nad Kneznou, and near the border made her get into the boot, where border police found her during a routine search.
Czech Republic one of least religious countries in world, says survey
The Czech Republic is one of the least religious countries in the world, according to a survey carried out over a four-month period this year in 44 countries by the Pew Research Centre for the People and the Press and published in the US newspaper Christian Science Monitor. The survey found that only 11% of Czechs said religion played a very significant role in life.
Czech Republic beat Finland in ice hockey's Baltic
The Czech Republic's ice hockey team are just one point away from winning the Baltic Cup in Moscow, after a 3:2 win over Finland on Saturday. The Czechs now need to at least draw with hosts Russia on Sunday to win the tournament.
