New Lasvit installation in London honours war veterans

Poppies

A new installation by Czech luxury glass and light firm Lasvit honouring war veterans was recently unveiled in London. The site-specific artwork, called Poppies, was made for the Raffles London hotel, situated in the Old War Office, which served as the former headquarters of the Ministry of Defence and the office of Winston Churchill.

The new Lasvit installation features hand-made poppy flowers, made of large-scale pieces of fused glass in multiple shades of red. Each of the pieces was individually cut and shaped into specific molds to mirror the natural formations of real flowers. The petals cascade from the ceiling and come together to form a grand poppy blossom when viewed from below.

Petra Šosťáková, who has designed the artwork, says her aim was to mimic the undulating motion of poppy flowers in nature:

“I wanted to capture the essence of the natural poppy flowers, their swaying movement in the field, and the profound significance they hold.”
