Mayor of village close to Vrbětice blast demanding compensation
The mayor of Slavičín, a village in the vicinity of the Vrbětice munitions depo, where life was severely disrupted by the 2014 blasts, is calling on the government to ensure that the locals receive compensation for the damage caused.
The blast completely devastated large areas of land in private ownership, damaged a local road, shattered windows and necessitated three evacuations. The owners of land which was contaminated by the blast were not allowed on the property for six years.
Previous demands for compensation were rejected on the grounds that the culprit was unknown. The clean-up operation in the area cost close to a billion crowns.
