"Jsme fér" initiative continues push for marriage equality
The "Jsme fér" initiative and authors of previous appeals to lawmakers are determined to keep advocating for marriage equality in Czechia. Although new partnership rules for same-sex couples take effect in January, the group argues they fall short of true equality. In a statement, the initiative and over ten public figures stressed that full marriage rights exist in 36 countries, urging Czech lawmakers to follow suit. Critics, however, argue that marriage should remain a union between a man and a woman. "Equal marriage is not an attack on tradition but an affirmation of love, care, and mutual support," the statement said.
