Is it the beer? Plzeň beats Prague and Brno on Numbeo quality of life index
The West Bohemian metropolis is ranked 54th on the Numbeo quality of life index for January, overtaking not only Prague and Brno, but cities such as Oslo, Madrid, Dubai and Berlin. Numbeo is the world's largest statistical portal that collects data directly from people reflecting their satisfaction with life in the given city.
It is a first for the West Bohemian city of Plzeň, which is famous the world over for being the cradle of the delicious golden brew. But now there’s proof that the city has more to offer than just good beer. Plzeň Mayor Roman Zarzycký says he’s delighted with the city’s listing.
“Plzeň is the fourth largest city in the country and we are in very good financial shape, so it is no surprise to me that all indicators look positive for us. I must admit, however, that I did not expect such a high ranking at the international level. It is great news and at the same time an impulse and motivation to continue the work we have been doing. Thanks to everyone who contributed to this result."
Plzeň is ranked 54th on the Numbeo index, with Brno placing 94th and Prague 97th. The overall ranking is made up of data on the cost of living, healthcare, transport or crime. Plzeň residents themselves gave it high marks in an online questionnaire. Daniel Kůs, City Councillor for Smart Cities and Business Support, says the high ranking should help the city to grow.
"Appearing in the Numbeo world statistics is a great achievement in itself. It is also a way to make yourself known to new investors, companies or tourists. This will further improve the city’s image and competitiveness and bring us greater prosperity.”
The results will also help the local government, which, thanks to comparisons with other cities, can respond to the needs of residents by, for example, further improving infrastructure, services or the public sector.
"It is important for us to monitor how Plzeň is doing on a national and international scale. In that way we can better plan the development of the city for the benefit of its citizens," Kůs said.
Plzeň was included in the Numbeo global survey thanks to the activities of the Information Technology Administration of the City of Pilsen. Its director, Luděk Šantora stressed the importance of being on the Numbeo list.
"We are creating the Pilsen Innovation Ecosystem PINE here, by which we support technical education and innovative entrepreneurship in the region. But we also think about employees and to ensure that residents have well-paid jobs, we attract investors and quality employers to Plzeň. For this reason, we wanted to be included in the world database Numbeo, because it is a useful tool for improving the reputation of a given city, as well as for planning in the investment and business sphere on a global scale."
Numbeo is the world's largest statistical portal that collects data directly from people. It was founded by Mladen Adamovic, who previously worked as a software engineer for Google. Originally created to compare the cost of living, Numbeo now includes data on housing, healthcare, transport quality and crime rates.
