Spidla refuses to review finance reform plan

The Czech Prime Minister, Vladimir Spidla, has said his government will not bow to pressure from trade unions to water down planned public finance reforms. Mr Spidla's comments follow a demonstration by up to 15,000 trade unionists in the centre of Prague on Monday, against the planned reforms.

Wiesenthal centre says more must be done to find Nazi war criminals in Austria

The Simon Wiesenthal Centre has begun a major campaign in Austria to track down and bring to trial suspected Nazi War criminals. The centre has long criticized Austria for not doing enough to bring to justice alleged war criminals who may be living in Austria.

Poland commemorates 1939 Soviet invasion

Poland has been honouring the victims of the September 17, 1939 Soviet invasion of Poland. It's thought that two millions poles were deported to Siberia, Kazakhstan and Kamchatka during the soviet occupation and more than half a million of them were murdered.

Doubts about health of Pope follows visit to Slovakia

The Pope has given thanks for his four-day pilgrimage to Slovakia last week. The visit by the 83-year has raised fresh doubts about the state of his health and his ability to keep travelling. Upon his arrival in Slovakia last Thursday John Paul was unable to complete his arrival remarks for the first time in 102 foreign trips.
