Hungary's famous Tokaj wine becomes a little more exclusive

The north-eastern Hungarian region of Tokaj is the best-known wine-growing area in the country.

Since the name of the region is also an internationally recognised brand name, Hungary has done its best to secure the exclusive use of the Tokay name on wine bottle labels. But within the European Union, France and Italy produce wines bearing this brand name although with slight spelling variations. Now, in line with the EU regulations, these two countries are to refrain from using the Tokaj brand name as of next spring. For the details, Sándor Laczkó of Radio Budapest spoke to the head of the European market department at the Hungarian Ministry of Agriculture, Zoltán Harcz.
