Greenpeace criticises plan to give environment ministry to Motorists movement

Environmental group Greenpeace has criticised the emerging coalition’s plan to let the Motorists lead the Ministry of the Environment, calling it a disregard for the public interest.

The organisation says a party opposing renewable energy, seeking to cut environmental subsidies, and aiming to weaken climate and landscape protection rules is unfit to head a ministry responsible for protecting nature and public health.

Greenpeace has urged President Petr Pavel to ensure the nominee is a credible candidate committed to safeguarding the environment and public well-being, not advancing fossil fuel interests.

On Thursday, Greenpeace and other environmental groups — backed by more than 50 professors and 400 scientists — also called on ANO leader Andrej Babiš not to nominate anyone from the Motorists movement, warning that its programme conflicts with ANO’s previous environmental record.
