Government rejects debate on minister’s comments on conditions under Nazi rule

The government have blocked an opposition proposal for a Chamber of Deputies debate on statements the minister of justice made about conditions in Bohemia and Moravia during the Nazi occupation. For her part, Minister Helena Válková on Tuesday repeatedly apologised to MPs for suggesting in an interview that “not much had happened” during the so-called protectorate. Petr Fiala, chairman of the opposition Civic Democrats, said the minister’s comments had been ahistorical nonsense and called on her to weigh up whether she should remain in her post. Culture Minister Daniel Herman said the opposition ought not to abuse Ms. Válková comments to adopt cheap populist positions
