German Defence Ministry provides further details on tank donation to Czechia
The 15 tanks that Germany plans to donate to the Czech Republic will come with 30 days’ worth of 120mm ammunition supplies, the German Ministry of Defence has stated in a letter addressed to the Bundestag. Germany expects the tank deliveries to begin this year. Their subsequent maintenance will be a responsibility of the Czech Republic, the letter states.
Germany will supply 14 Leopard 2 A4 models and one rescue tank that is based on the Leopard, Czech Radio reports citing the letter.
The tanks are being donated in order to substitute the 20 T-72 tanks that the Czech Republic has sent to the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
Both states have also launched talks on the Prague government buying up to 50 of the most modern Leopard tanks, the 2A7+. The purchase could go ahead in the coming years, the Czech minister of defence, Jana Černochová, told the cabinet at a meeting last week.
