Gaia Mesiah: A titan of female influence in Czech music

Gaia Mesiah

Gaia Mesiah is one of the bands that have influenced the Czech scene the most. The predominantly female band combines rock, punk and grunge, among other genres, and has many fans all over the country.

It all started at the beginning of the new millennium when guitarist Santa Morella and drummer Misha Cortéz formed the band, later bringing in singer Mark Rybin. Bassist Josh Stewart, the only other member, also joined the band. This line-up marked Gaia Messiah's first performance in Prague in 2001.

The band recorded their first full-length album in 2005. Titled Ocean, the album featured hits like "Mañana" and "San Pedro," among others.

Two years later, the group released another album, Alpha Female, which further strengthened their position on the national scene.

In 2008, the band released a live album recorded during a double concert in Prague, titled Thank You Dr. Porazit. However, that year, the band faced a major setback when the singer announced she was leaving the project.

The band later returned to the stage with Viktor Dyke as the new vocalist, but in 2011, Gaia Messiah concluded their journey.

But it wasn't the end. In 2016, the original band members announced their reunion, and three years later, they released a new album called Excellent Mistake. Although the band had sung in English from the start, they gradually began incorporating a few songs in Czech into their repertoire.

In 2023, they released their latest album, Waves, a title that reflects both the waves of the sea and the waves of human existence.
