Environmental Report Shows Czech Republic Has Some Way to Go
The Czech Republic has made a lot of progress over the last few years in the field of environmental reform, but the country still has a lot of catching up to align itself with the European Union. That's the verdict of a report published this week by the Department of the Environment, Charles University and a firm of special consultants. Peter Smith has that story.
The report particularly noted that although EU harmonization appeared to be being achieved at a national level, locally the situation was more vague. It particularly criticized the lack of specific technical information and co-ordination in determining local environmental policy. David Ringrose, the First Secretary of the EU delegation to Prague, believes that information about membership is the key.
The report also sought to analyse the general public's attitude to future EU membership, and was particularly critical of the authorities' inability to provide specific information on what it will truly mean. Ivan Gabal is one of the authors of the report.
