English-language version of "The Snow Queen" to hit the stage in Prague

The concept of turning popular children's stories into musicals is becoming an ever more popular trend in the Czech Republic. The latest addition to the musical scene is based on Hans Christen Anderson's fairy tale "The Snow Queen", an English-language premiere of which will open November 11th. Pavla Navratilova reports:

Hans Christen Anderson's story of the Snow Queen was recently transformed into a Czech-language musical, called Snehova Kralovna. The musical was so successful that plans were immediately made to translate the score into English, with the aim of taking it abroad. Rehearsals for the English-language version are currently underway, ahead of the premiere this weekend in Prague.

I talked to two of the main leads from "The Snow Queen", Josef Puskas and Dana Koklesova, who first of all gave me an indication of what to expect: The Czech-language version of the musical was so successful that it was performed more than 70 times this year alone. If the English version of "The Snow Queen" is successful, then Josef Puskas hopes to take the musical on an international tour of Europe, the USA and Asia.

For the time being, you can see "The Snow Queen" in the Jiri Grossman Theatre, which is located just off Wenceslas Square.
