EDF ends legal challenge over Dukovany reactor contract, Czechia’s largest government deal ever

French energy giant company EDF will not take further legal steps in the Czech Republic regarding the tender for the construction of new nuclear reactors at the Dukovany power plant. The company confirmed this after the Regional Court in Brno dismissed its lawsuit against the Czech Competition Authority (ÚOHS), which had previously rejected EDF’s objections to the tender won by South Korea’s KHNP. With this decision, EDF closes its legal challenge, clearing the way for the largest government contract in Czech history. The deal, signed on June 4 by KHNP and the state-owned Elektrárna Dukovany II (EDU II), covers the construction of two nuclear units worth an estimated 407 billion crowns. The first reactor is scheduled to go online in 2036.

EDF acknowledged the Brno court’s June 25 ruling and announced it would not pursue a final appeal to the Supreme Administrative Court. Prime Minister Petr Fiala (Civic Democratic Party) and representatives of EDU II welcomed the verdict, which marks the definitive end of a years-long selection process.
