EC vice-president concerned for fate of democracy and rule of law in EU

Vice-President of the European Commission Věra Jourová is concerned about the fate of democracy and rule of law in the European Union.

Jourova, who holds the values and transparently portfolio in the EC, said in an interview for Der Spiegel magazine that media independence is coming under pressure in almost all EU countries.

According to Jourová, the principles of rule of law in the former Eastern bloc states, particularly, Hungary and Poland, are often “bent” to an alarming degree.

The European Commission is to issue a detailed analysis on the rule of law in individual member states next month.
