Detention of Jehovah's Witness in 1989 was illegal, Olomouc court says
The incarceration of Milan Tomis, who was detained for almost two months in 1989 for refusing to take part in military exercises as a Jehovah's Witness, was illegal, as stated on Wednesday by Olomouc District Court judge Jakub Kučera. His freedom was restricted by the then military prosecutor Igor Stříž, later the highest state prosecutor. The man spent the period of the Velvet Revolution in prison.
The over thirty-five-year-old case was discovered in the archive by attorney Lubomír Müller, who has been involved in hundreds of similar cases. Mr. Tomis did not participate in the hearing. During the hearing, Judge Kučera said that it is better to deal with similar cases late than even later or never at all.
