Cardinal Beran interred in final resting place at St. Vitus Cathedral
Cardinal Josef Beran’s remains were interred in their final resting place at St. Vitus Cathedral on Monday evening. His remains were transferred to the Czech Republic last week - decades after their return was blocked by the former communist regime.
The cardinal died in 1969 and his last wish was that his remains be returned to his homeland.
Cardinal Beran's coffin arrived by military plane last Friday and church bells across Prague were rung to mark the historic occasion. During his life and after, the cardinal came to symbolize opposition to totalitarianism.
His coffin will not be buried below ground but be placed in a new sarcophagus within the cathedral.
Karlštejn Castle to undergo renovation at cost of 95 million crowns
The Czech Republic’s famous Karlštejn Castle, located near Beroun outside of Prague, is to be renovated at the cost of some 95 million crowns.
According to the Czech News Agency, 85 percent of the costs will be covered by EU funds.
The head of the National Heritage Institute Naďa Goryczková said on Monday that the castle would remain open during the renovation project although some parts of the site would periodically have to remain closed.
The renovation of Karlštejn will include the creation of a modern visitors’ centre.
The Gothic castle, founded by Holy Roman Emperor and King Charles IV in 1348, one of the most visited sites outside the capital. Historically, the castle served as a place for safekeeping of the Bohemian crown jewels and other royal treasures.
Special screening of Amadeus honouring Miloš Forman held at Municipal House
Hundreds of attendees, including members of the Czech film industry and other public figures, packed Prague's historic Municipal House on Sunday evening for a special screening of the film Amadeus. The screening was to honour the film's director Miloš Forman, who died on April 13 at the age of 86.
The screening of the 3.5 hour director's cut was held in Smetana Hall. Amadeus is considered by some to be Forman's greatest masterpiece.
Ahead of the screening, the Prague Symphony Orchestra performed the overture to Don Giovanni and part of Mozart's Symphony No. 38 in D major, conducted by Tomáš Brauner. A previously unreleased documentary about Forman made by students from FAMU in 1998 was also shown.
Forman was one the best directors to come out of the Czech New Wave in the 1960s. He won two Academy Awards for best director, one of them for Amadeus, the other for One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.
Head of the VZP to receive generous bonus for 2017
The head of the state-insurer VZP, Zdeněk Kabátek, will receive a bonus of 1.215 million crowns for 2017, 90 percent of the maximum possible amount, Zdeněk Hřib, a member of the administrative board confirmed on Monday.
He said the original recommendations of 100 percent and 95 percent had not found backing.
The head of the VZP earns a gross monthly wage of 225,000 crowns per month.
VZP is the country’s largest insurer, providing coverage for 5.9 million people.
Hockey: Kometa Brno clinch Extraliga title, winning series against Třinec
Hockey club Kometa Brno successfully defended their Extraliga title from last year, defeating Třinec in game five of the final series by a score of 4-1. Kometa won the entire series by the same margin. The club now has a record 13 titles in its history; Dukla Jihlava have 12.
Stanley Cup playoffs: Neuwirth, Flyers, lose against Pittsburgh
Hockey's Pittsburgh Penguins made it a miserable night for opponents the Philadelphia Flyers and in particular goalie Michal Neuwirth who probably wishes he could have a do-over.
The Czech stopped 20 shots by the Pens but allowed seven goals in a game which finished 8-5 in favour of the defending Stanley Cup champions. The win means the Penguins move forward to the second round. The series tally was 4-2.
The Penguins are aiming to be the first NHL team since Al Arbour's New York Islanders in the early 1980s to win the Stanley Cup three times in a row.
