D1 motorway fully completed after 58 years
The country’s D1 motorway, which connects Prague, Brno and Ostrava and runs to the Czech-Polish border, has been fully completed 58 years after construction began. The last unfinished section between Přerov and Říkovice, which cost about seven billion crowns, opened to drivers on Friday. The roughly ten-kilometre stretch was originally due to open in March next year, but construction was completed about three months early, according to the Road and Motorway Directorate. The D1 is the country’s oldest and longest motorway, and in some sections the busiest. Initial plans date back to the 1930s, but construction of the first section began only in 1967 after being delayed by the war.
