Czechia marks 20 years in EU with key political shifts
In 2024, Czechia celebrated 20 years in the EU, alongside notable political changes. June’s European Parliament elections saw the opposition ANO Party win with 26.14% of the vote, while surprising gains were made by the Přísaha (Oath) and Motoristé Sobě (Motorists) coalition. Jozef Síkela (formerly Minister of Trade and Industry) was appointed Czechia’s new European Commissioner, taking over from Věra Jourová after a decade in Brussels. Síkela’s portfolio of International Partnerships drew mixed reactions. Jourová, known for her work on data protection and gender equality, returned to Prague to serve as Vice-Rector at Charles University.
