Czech solar power nearly doubles in five years, outpacing EU growth

The Czech Republic has nearly doubled its solar power generation over the past five years, rising from 2.3 terawatt-hours in 2019 to 4 terawatt-hours in 2024. According to a new analysis by the think tank Ember, solar energy covered 14.7 percent of the country’s electricity consumption in June 2025, up from 10.5 percent a year earlier. Investment subsidies and the sharp fall in photovoltaic panel prices in recent years have both contributed to the surge.

The study highlights that solar generation in Central Europe, namely in the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, and Slovakia, has grown twice as fast as the EU average since 2019. Cumulative output in the region increased nearly six fold by 2024, compared with a 2.5-fold rise across the EU.
