In reaction to a suspected case of foot-and-mouth disease in the region of lower Saxony of Germany, tighter controls have been imposed by the Czech authorities to prevent the possible spread of foot-and-mouth to the Czech Republic.

At Prague's Ruzyne airport, all passengers coming from EU countries must walk across disinfecting mats and discard any meat products they have with them. Furthermore, all cars and people entering the Czech Republic from Germany, Austria, and Poland will also be disinfected. Although tests are currently being carried out in lower Saxony to detect whether the suspected cases are indeed foot-and-mouth related, there was bad news elsewhere on the European mainland on Tuesday morning.
