Czech President Pavel among candidates for Ukraine peace negotiator, The Telegraph reports
Czech President Petr Pavel is one of five politicians being considered by European leaders for the role of chief negotiator with Russian President Vladimir Putin on ending the war in Ukraine, according to The Telegraph. The paper cites diplomatic sources who said some of the potential candidates had already been approached.
Europe wants to play a more prominent role in negotiations with Russia after more than a year and a half of US-led mediation failed to produce a tangible breakthrough. Concerns have also grown that US President Donald Trump no longer represents the interests of Europe and is favouring Moscow in efforts to end the conflict.
According to The Telegraph, the other politicians under consideration are Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Finnish President Alexander Stubb, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre.
