Czech politicians congratulate Merz on election victory in Germany

Czech politicians have congratulated Friedrich Merz and the CDU/CSU on their victory in Germany’s parliamentary elections. In a statement for Czech Radio Prime Minister Petr Fiala described it as “a big day for Germany” saying he is hoping for a stronger focus on pan-European issues. Opposition leader Andrej Babiš called the outcome good for Germany, Europe, and for bilateral relations. Tomio Okamura of the Freedom and Direct Democracy Party, who observed the outcome from AfD’s election headquarters, said he would have wished to see the party gain more votes, seeing it as a potential shift for Europe. Other Czech politicians stressed the importance of a stable German government, economic reforms, and a firm stance on security and migration.
