Czech Foreign Ministry advising Czechs in South Korea to exercise caution
The Foreign Ministry has sent an sms message to Czechs in South Korea to avoid mass events and to monitor official media. According to Daniel Drake, a spokesman for the ministry, there are presently around 61 Czechs in the country registered in the ministry’s Drozd travel data base.
The situation in South Korea remains volatile after President Yoon Suk Yeol’s unexpectedly declared martial law in a late-night address on Tuesday to "crush anti-state forces that have been wreaking havoc". Lawmakers who assembled in South Korea’s parliament unanimously voted to block the president’s decree. Under South Korean law, the president is obliged to comply with the vote.
In his first reaction to the news Czech Foreign Minister Jan Lipavsky said he believes in the strength of South Korean democracy. He said the ministry is keeping a close eye on developments.
