Czech Defence Ministry seeks EU backing for major arms and infrastructure spending
The Czech Ministry of Defence is preparing to submit a plan to the European Commission outlining how it intends to use up to CZK 52 billion in loans from the new SAFE programme (Security Action for Europe). According to the ministry, the funds would go toward purchasing Leopard 2A8 tanks, Tatra T-815 vehicles and financing part of the D11 motorway construction.
A total of 19 EU member states, including the Czech Republic, have applied for support from the newly launched financial tool, which is designed to facilitate loans for military equipment. Governments must present their specific project lists to Brussels by 30 November. The Commission will evaluate the proposals by January, with final loan agreements expected to be signed by March next year.
