Czech Army leadership of NATO battlegroup in Slovakia to end next June

The Czech Army will only be in charge of the multi-national battlegroup of alliance forces in Slovakia bolstering NATO’s Eastern flank until next June, when the leadership will be handed over to the Spanish. The news was confirmed by Chief of the General Staff Karel Řehka on Wednesday.

The NATO mission in Slovakia was established last March in response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. It currently has around 1,100 soldiers, about 450 of them Czechs. In addition to the Czechs and Slovaks, it also includes German, American and Slovene troops.
