Cyril and Methodius, Apostles to the Slavs
Saints Cyril and Methodius, often revered as the Apostles to the Slavs, are celebrated each year on the 5th of July. This day is also a public holiday in both Czechia and Slovakia.
The two brothers created the Glagolitic alphabet, the precursor to Cyrillic, which enabled the translation of liturgical texts into the language known as Old Church Slavonic. This monumental achievement not only facilitated the spread of Christianity but also fostered the development of a distinct Slavic cultural identity. They were key personalities connected with Great Moravia, the first real organized state in this part of Europe.
Joining us to shed light on these fascinating topics is Don Sparling, emeritus professor of Masaryk University, who brings his extensive knowledge and insights into the significance of these remarkable figures. We spoke at the Monument of Great Moravia in Staré Město near Uherské Hradiště.
