Constitutional court rejects Communist Party’s proposal over lack of legal standing

The Czech Constitutional Court has dismissed a proposal from the Communist Party seeking to overturn provisions of the Criminal Code that allow prosecution for promoting communism. The court ruled that the party lacked the legal standing required to file such a petition, and therefore did not review the substance of the complaint.

The Communist Party argued that the legislation represents an excessive interference with political rights. The proposal was filed on 17 November — the anniversary of the events that launched the Velvet Revolution and ultimately ended communist rule.
