Commemorative ceremonies mark 80 years since Prague Uprising against Nazi oppression

Commemorative ceremonies marking 80 years since the Prague Uprising were held around Czechia on Monday. One of the key events in Prague took place outside the Czech Radio building in Vinohradska Street which was the focal point of the uprising and the site of one of the biggest battles with Nazi forces. Over 100 people died in its immediate vicinity and hundreds of others were killed in the fighting around Prague.

The ceremony was attended by Senate President Miloš Vystrčil, Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies Markéta Pekarová Adamová, Defense Minister Jana Černochová and Prague Mayor Bohuslav Svoboda among others.Speakers at the event drew parallels to the war in Ukraine and stressed the need to stand up to evil.

In the afternoon Mayor Svoboda will open a multimedia exhibition Old Town Square. A large screen will project authentic period footage and virtual reality demonstrations, transporting visitors to the beginning of May 1945.
