Choupenitch becomes Czechia's first men's fencing world champion

Alexander Choupenitch has made history by becoming the first Czech man to win a fencing world title. The 32-year-old foil fencer defeated Italy's Paris Olympic silver medallist Filippo Macchi 15–2 in a one-sided final at the World Championships in Hong Kong. Choupenitch also ended a 40-year wait for a Czech medal at the championships, the last having been silver won by épée fencer Jaroslav Jurka in 1985. The only previous Czech or Czechoslovak world champion was women's foil fencer Marie Šedivá, who claimed the title in 1938. Choupenitch already has an Olympic bronze from Tokyo and two European Championship bronze medals.
