Avalanche alert in Jeseníky Mountains

The Jeseníky Mountain Rescue Service has called a third-degree avalanche alert, following heavy snowfall in the last 24 hours.

The service said strong winds and a blanket of fresh snow presented a serious danger on slopes steeper than 30 degrees.

Although most ski resorts are not in operation due to the coronavirus restrictions, Czechs have taken the slopes by storm, skiing, bobbing and cross-country skiing despite the fact that ski lifts are not working.

One ski alpinist was killed in an avalanche on Friday, after straying from the marked trails.
