Words, words, words
Hello and welcome to another edition of SoundCzech in which you can learn Czech phrases with the help of song lyrics. Today’s song is by the group Spiritual Kvintet and the phrase to listen out for is “správné slovo”.
At the other end of the scale is “křivé slovo”, which means a negative word or better still negative opinion. “Nikdy mi neřekl křivé slovo” means he has never said anything bad to me. “Slovo do pranice” means a word leading up to a fight and refers to a statement that is highly provocative. “Už ani slovo” means not another word and is an expression parents often use when trying to get their children to stop arguing.
Other frequently used expressions with the word “slovo” are “hledám to spravné slovo” meaning I am searching for the right word; or “nenachazím slov”– I am speechless. “Máš slovo” or “máte slovo” is the Czech expression for the floor is yours, and finally “prazdná slova” means empty words.
Someone who is not inclined to be talkative is “skoupí na slovo” meaning they are short on words. On the other hand, “nepustil mně ke slovu” he did not let me say a word refers to overly talkative people who do let you get a word in edgeways. “Máš moje slovo” means you have my word, or you have my promise on this matter and finally “Boží slovo” is God’s word.
