Hello and welcome to a fresh edition of Sound Czech, in which you can learn Czech idioms with the help of song lyrics. Today’s song is by the popular Czech band Chinaski. It is called Zadarmo / For Free and it is literally packed with interesting idioms and phrases. Let’s have a look at some of them:

The song is about a man who works so hard that he forgets to enjoy the really important things in life, which actually come for free – jsou zadarmo.

The man took a lease and two mortgages, according to the first line of the song, but he soon became stressed out as the situation got beyond him – měl z toho nervy and it was beyond his powers– bylo to nad jeho síly.

Čeho je moc, toho je příliš– enough is enough, the song continues, but it doesn't matter anyway, because the man has already popped his clogs – or, as we say in Czech - natáhl bačkory, a very expressive idiom which literally means he pulled on his slippers.

Už nám z toho všeho hrabe, says the refrain of the song. It means – we are all going nuts and a little further you can hear a similar phrase with the same meaning - už nám z toho všeho šibe.

And I am afraid that’s all we have time for today from this not so upbeat episode of Sound Czech. Thank you very much for listening and until next time, nashledanou.
