Vlny (‘Waves’) wins six Czech Lion Awards, including Best Feature Film

At the Czech Lion Awards, held at Prague’s Rudolfinum on Saturday evening, Vlny (‘Waves’) scooped up six awards out of its fourteen nominations. The film by director Jiří Mádl depicts the events of 1968, when Czechoslovakia experienced the Prague Spring and then the invasion of Warsaw Pact troops. After its release on August 15th, Vlny became the highest-grossing Czech film of 2024, and the second highest-grossing Czech film of all time.

Jiří Mádl also won Best Director and Best Screenplay, while Tatiana Pauhofová and Stanislav Majer won Best Supporting Actress and Best Supporting Actor for their roles in the film. Best Actor in a Main Role went to Oldřich Kaiser in Zahradníkův rok (‘The Gardener's Year’), and Best Actress in a Main Role was won by Pavla Beretová in Rok vdovy (‘Year of the Widow’).
