Tuesday saw fall in coronavirus cases, reproduction number indicates epidemic in retreat

Tuesday saw 250 cases of the COVID-19 coronavirus detected in Czechia, data from the Ministry of Health shows. That is 49 fewer cases than on Tuesday last week. Furthermore, the reproduction number – the average number of people infected by one person with the virus – fell from 0.95 to 0.97, indicating that the epidemic spread is falling. The seven-day incidence ratio lies at 12 infected people per 100,000 inhabitants.

Currently, 64 patients infected with COVID-19 are in hospital and 11 of them are in serious condition.

Nevertheless, experts warn that the number of cases is likely to start increasing from September, when children go back to school. Ladislav  Dušek from the Institute of Health Information and Statistics said that, according to the high risk scenario, this could mean around 500 people requiring hospitalisation by mid-September.

Tuesday saw 39,150 people receive a dose of the coronavirus vaccine, bringing the total number of vaccines distributed up to 11.3 million. In total, 5.6 million people in Czechia have received both doses.
