Fixed-line telephone operators, the dominant operator Czech Telecom and one of the major alternative carriers, Aliatel, launched a pilot project of call-by-call carrier selection on Moday. The test is being carried out in the Jihlava region, South Moravia. If successful, the test will be extended to other regions. The entire project is to be completed by the end of June. Call-by-call carrier selection will enable Czech Telecom's subscribers to choose another carrier by dialling a short prefix. Clients must have a contract with the given alternative carrier, and will pay the price fixed by this carrier for the individual call. Together with number portability, call-by-call carrier selection is one of the conditions of full liberalisation of the Czech telecommunication market. At the moment, Czech Telecom is leading talks with seven carriers on the introduction of this service on a commercial basis.
